Peter MacRae

Peter Howard MacRae passed away on August 21, 2023, at a hospital. He was born in Hamilton, ON in 1936, the son of Dr. C. Fred and Jessie E. (Horn) MacRae. Peter received his education from various elementary schools in Ontario and attended secondary school in Sackville, N.B. He graduated from Mount Allison University in 1961 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Divinity degree from McGill University and a Master of Arts degree from the University of New Brunswick. Peter began his career in journalism in the 1950s and ended it a decade later while working for the Gazette in Montreal. In 1964, he was ordained as a minister of the Anglican Church of Canada and served as an assistant curate at Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton.

After leaving parish ministry in 1968, Peter worked as a public servant in New Brunswick until 1979. He then spent the following 12 years directing the office of alumni affairs at Mount Allison. In 1992, he returned to church ministry in Nova Scotia and served as rector of the Parish of Melford and Guysborough. Later, he became the rector of the reconfigured parish of Strait-Chedabucto, which included congregations from Port Hawkesbury to Guysborough County’s Dort’s Cove. Peter retired to Pictou, N.S. in 2002 and served as priest-in-charge of the parish of Bible Hill, N.S. from 2005-2009. He also held the position of archdeacon of Northern Nova Scotia for some time. Peter briefly resided in New Glasgow and Antigonish before returning to Sackville in 2022.

Peter is survived by his wife Helen of Sackville, their son Neil (Karen) of Hinchinbrooke, Que., daughter Kathryn of Fredericton, as well as four grandchildren and one great-grandson. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of The Moncton Hospital, particularly the doctors and nurses of the 5th Floor and Palliative Care Unit. They would also like to thank Dr. Steve Gallant of Antigonish, NS, for his many years of dedicated care.

Arrangements for Peter’s memorial have been entrusted to Jones Funeral Home, Sackville, NB. Cremation has already taken place, and there will be no visitation. A celebration of the holy eucharist and of Peter’s life will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Sackville on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at 2 PM, with Father Craig O’Brien officiating. Following the service, there will be a reception in the church hall. Peter will be laid to rest in the Sackville Cemetery.
