Richard SPICER

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Richard William Spicer, affectionately known as Dick, on October 1, 2023. He peacefully left us at the age of 80 at WRH, Met. Campus, following a brief stay. Richard was a devoted husband to Ann (nee Verney) for an incredible 56 years. He was a loving and cherished father to Andrew (Farah) and a doting “Papa” to his grandchildren, Leah and Aidan. Richard was also a dear brother to Jim (Jennette). Sadly, he was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Lenore.

Richard’s early years were spent in London, Tilbury, and Windsor alongside his parents and younger brother Jim. The untimely passing of his parents compelled him to seek independence at a young age. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario, he began his career as a reporter at the Windsor Star. Richard firmly believed in the significance of quality journalism and dedicated 29 years to perfecting his craft and maintaining professionalism at the Windsor Star. Following his tenure at the newspaper, he generously shared his knowledge and passion by teaching journalism at St. Clair College for ten years. Richard had a profound interest in science and technology from a young age and was an early adopter of computers. He enjoyed this hobby along with reading. As an educator, he introduced his students to the early stages of internet-assisted journalism.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff on the 5th floor at WRH, Met. Campus for their attentive and compassionate care. In accordance with Richard’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation in his honor will occur at Windsor Chapel Funeral Home (Central Chapel) on Thursday, October 5, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held on Friday, October 6, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. within the Chapel. In memory of Richard, contributions may be made to the Windsor-Essex Humane Society (1375 Provincial Rd., Windsor, ON N8W-5V8). We kindly invite you to share your condolences and cherished memories of Richard with the family at http://www.windsorchapel.com.
