Roy Maksymec, a resident of Leduc, Alberta, sadly passed away on August 24, 2023, at the age of 99 after a short illness. Roy was an enthusiastic sports lover and participant, earning silver medals twice in the Alberta Senior Games for his remarkable performances in the 800m race and frisbee golf. His love for games extended to challenging his loved ones to tennis, table tennis, frisbee, board games, and cards. He and his wife, Beverly Maksymec, cherished 63 years together, spending 56 of those years on their farm south of Leduc. Roy’s infectious spirit brought joy to countless occasions, and his family and friends will forever hold onto fond memories of their time together.
Roy is survived by his wife Beverly; his four children, Greg Loose (Christine), Richard Loose (Carolyn), Betty Ann McBlain (William), and Allan Maksymec (Kathleen); his nine grandchildren, Jeremy Loose (Kelsey), Leanne McDonald (Rob), Colin Loose (Lindsey), Kyle Loose, Melissa Loose (Lee), Kayleigh Maksymec, Alexandra Maksymec, Sienna Maksymec, and Maximilian Maksymec; and his great-grandchildren, Quinn and Carter Loose (Colin), Casey Loose (Jeremy), and James Norsworthy (Leanne). Roy spent his formative years in Elk Point, Alberta, alongside his four brothers and three sisters. He left the family farm in 1942 to work in Edmonton and eventually joined the Alberta Department of Highways. During his time there, he played a significant role in surveying and designing highways throughout Alberta, eventually earning the title of Civil Engineer.
In 1967, Roy and Beverly decided to reconnect with the countryside by purchasing a farm south of Leduc to raise their family. On this farm, Roy dedicated himself to raising purebred Hereford cattle and cultivating various crops. After retiring in 1999, the couple settled on an acreage on part of their original farm, where they lived contentedly until February 2023. Roy’s parents, Theodore and Anna Maksymec, as well as his siblings William Maksymec, Michael Maksymec, Steven Maksymec, Helen Borutski, Lilly Palinka, and numerous other family and friends, preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister Mary Olinyk and John Maksymec.
The funeral service for Roy will be held at St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Orthodox Sabor Parish in Elk Point, Alberta, on Saturday, September 2nd, at 11 am. Following that, a memorial for family and friends will take place at The Telford House Seniors Centre in Leduc on Saturday, September 9th, from 1:30 to 4:30 pm. In honor of Roy’s affection for animals, the family kindly requests donations to the S.P.C.A. or a charity of the donor’s choice in lieu of flowers.
