Ryan Smolkin, the founder of Smoke’s Poutinerie and an esteemed mentor to many, passed away on October 29, 2023. He was born on August 23, 1973. Ryan was the beloved son of Howard Smolkin and the late Patricia Smolkin (nee Ridewood). He was a cherished and respected brother to Derek (Helen Braiter) and Nikki (Michael Shapiro). Ryan leaves behind his two sons, Nate and Sam, who were the lights of his life, along with their mother and caring co-parent, Tanya Smolkin (nee Bojarski). He will be deeply missed by his Aunt Deb and Uncle Roger Dougherty, as well as nephews Ben, Joey, and Isaac, and nieces Neilah and Mimi. Special cousins Christopher (Holly) and Aleah (Jeremy), and Howard’s partner Annice Kronick, were also important individuals in Ryan’s life. Additionally, he had a close-knit group of friends and an unbreakable bond with his loyal and trusted buddies from Wilfrid Laurier University.

A Funeral Service honoring Ryan Smolkin will take place on November 2, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. at Ottawa Torah Centre, located at 111 Lamplighter Drive, Ottawa. Following the service, interment will be held at Jewish Memorial Gardens, situated at 6549 Herberts Corners Rd, Greely, Ontario. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be livestreamed on the website of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry at http://www.hpmcgarry.ca.

Instead of sending flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to We Care or a charity of your choosing. The family will be observing Shiva at the home of Nikki and Michael Shapiro, located at 14 Parkglen Drive, Ottawa. Shiva will commence on Thursday evening and continue until the morning of Wednesday, November 8. Services will be held each evening at 5:30 p.m.
