On August 1, 2023, Sharon (Shar) Nicole Desbarats passed away at the age of 62, leaving behind cherished memories for her loved ones. Shar will be fondly remembered by her son Sifrid Desbarats-Mbentjen (Zigy) as well as her sisters Michelle, Lissa, Brynne, and Shasta. She was preceded in death by her Mother Marjorie Dean Desbarats, her father Peter Hullett Desbarats, and her sister Gabrielle.

Shar was born in Montreal, Quebec and spent her childhood in Charlottetown and Winnipeg. She pursued her passion for fine arts at the University of Manitoba, where she specialized in creating exquisite ceramics, pottery, and paintings. Throughout her lifetime, she continued to express her creativity through painting and even shared her knowledge by teaching others, both young and old. Shar dedicated her skills to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, served as an art teacher for the City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and provided private art lessons through local organizations in Ottawa.

Known for her kindness and courage, Shar deeply touched the hearts of all those who knew her. Despite facing the challenges of bipolar illness and the journey of sobriety, she managed to overcome them with remarkable success. Shar’s commitment to her well-being included regular attendance at support meetings, forming profound connections within her community. Her family and friends adored her and were privileged to experience her love. To her sisters, she would frequently send “daily selfies” featuring different hairstyles, always accompanied by words of love and encouragement.

Zigy brought immense joy to Shar’s life, and she took immense pride in his achievements. Their shared passion for drawing and creating art allowed them to bond, and Zigy never failed to bring a smile to her face. The world has undoubtedly become a dimmer place following Shar’s departure, and she will be deeply missed. May she rest in peace as she becomes the angel she truly is.

A private family candlelight vigil was held on Friday, August 11, providing an opportunity for loved ones to come together and honor Shar’s memory. Those wishing to express their condolences may visit the website of Kelly’s Funeral Home – Somerset Chapel by Arbor Memorial at http://www.arbormemorial.ca/en/kelly-somerset/obituaries.

In memory of Shar, contributions can be made to the Ottawa Salus Corporation at http://www.salusottawa.org/. This organization focuses on providing supportive housing for adults living with serious mental illness, paying tribute to Shar’s commitment to mental health and the well-being of others.
