Shirley Hazel Benson

Shirley Hazel Dieterle, formerly known as Shirley Hazel Benson, passed away on October 1, 2023, at the age of 83 in Three Hills, Alberta. She was born on March 7, 1940, in Vulcan, Alberta to Leonard and Hazel Benson. Shirley was the oldest among her three siblings. She spent her childhood in Lomond, Alberta, where she completed her education and started her own family. Raising four boys kept her occupied and fulfilled. Throughout her life, Shirley held various jobs, but her most fulfilling role was as a Registered Nursing Assistant (RNA), where she provided care for the elderly and disabled.

In her later years, Shirley moved to Linden before settling in Three Hills at the Golden Hills Lodge, where she developed many close friendships. During this time, she found solace in reading the word of God and studying scriptures alongside her dear friend, Wes Davidson. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, sister Beverly, sister-in-law Shirley, and her sons Robin and Ricky.

Shirley’s memory will forever be cherished by her surviving family members. She leaves behind her brothers Don and Harold (Mary), as well as her sons Roger (Jill), Rocky (Deb), and Rodney (Brenda). Additionally, Shirley is survived by 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A service and gathering to celebrate Shirley’s life will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion in Vulcan, Alberta on October 20th at 1:00 pm. In recognition of her friends who are unable to travel to Vulcan, a separate service will be held in Linden.
