Shirley HERR

Shirley Elsie Herr (née Acheson) passed away peacefully at Kingston General Hospital on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at the age of 93 years. Shirley was born on October 1, 1930, to Marian and J. Ross Acheson. She grew up in Oyen, Alberta, and received her education there. She began taking piano lessons at the age of 9 and continued to pursue her love for music throughout her life. After graduating from Garbutt Business College in Calgary, she worked for various companies in Calgary and Vancouver before settling in London, Ontario in 1960. She married George Herr in London on August 2, 1963, and they had two sons, Kevin and Ian. Shirley was a dedicated mother who returned to work after four years to support her family. She eventually settled in Brockville, Ontario, where she worked for the HR department at the Brockville Psychiatric Hospital until her retirement in 1994.

In her retirement, Shirley and George enjoyed traveling extensively, taking cruises to several destinations and touring Europe. When she wasn’t traveling, Shirley enjoyed music, live theatre, and spending time with friends and family. Her home and loved ones were very important to her, and she cherished spending time with her grandchildren, Trevor and Charlotte. After George’s passing in 2018, Shirley moved into the Wedgewood Chartwell Retirement Residence, where she continued to share her love of music with the residents and staff.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents, both her stepfathers, her brother, sister-in-law, and her son, Kevin. She is survived by her son Ian, daughter-in-law Audrey, grandchildren Trevor and Charlotte, and her nieces Sheila, Janet, Katherine, Patricia, and their families. She will also be greatly missed by her dear friends Betty and Helen. A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 9, and a ceremony celebrating Shirley’s life will be held on Friday, November 10 at Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel in Brockville. Donations in her memory can be made to Wall Street United Church.
