Shirley Kirkpatrick

Shirley Clare Kirkpatrick, known affectionately as Auntie Shirley, passed away on August 27, 2023, at the age of 91. Her loved ones mourn her loss and hold onto cherished memories of her. Shirley is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Burton, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Perry Davis, Joy Kuehn, Fay Jasman, Prosper Boisvert, Vicki Noel, Eleanor Preuss, Louise Davis, Shirley Montpetit, Susan Hulbert, Jim Thain, and Barbara Halladay. She is also survived by her stepson, John Kirkpatrick, step-grandchildren, Jason Kirkpatrick, Ashley Kirkpatrick, David Skistod, and Tracy Mundell, as well as many great and great-great-nieces, nephews, and friends.

Shirley’s life was marked by various losses, including those of her husband, Pat Kirkpatrick, stepdaughter, Sherrill Ann Skistod, parents, Christopher and Jessie Burton, sister, Barbara Klymchuk, niece, Clare Boisvert, brother, Leonard Burton, nephew, Charles Burton, sister, Joyce Goodall, and nephew, Rick Hulbert. Born on September 23, 1931, Shirley was the youngest among four children in the Burton family and the last surviving member. In her later years, she resided in Independent Living before moving to the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre, where she peacefully passed away in Hospice. Just a few weeks shy of her 92nd birthday, Shirley lived a rich and fulfilling life. She dedicated 35 years of her life to teaching in Canada and abroad and thoroughly enjoyed playing Bridge and participating in her book club.

Shirley Kirkpatrick will be dearly missed for her intellectual conversations, generous nature, passion for the arts, and her beautiful smile that guided others throughout the years. She made a profound impact on the lives of many, and it is through these memories that she will be remembered. The family expresses their gratitude to Dr. Noush Mirhosseini and her palliative care team at the University of Alberta Hospital. A Memorial Service in remembrance of Shirley will take place on September 1, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the Connelly-McKinley Downtown Funeral Home in Edmonton.
