Sister Giovanni Finoro, a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph in Canada, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 13, 2023. She was residing at the Sisters of St. Joseph residence on Windermere Road in London, Ontario at the time of her passing. Sister Giovanni was born on December 3, 1936, in Guelph, Ontario. She joined the Sisters of St. Joseph community in Hamilton on September 8, 1953. Sister Giovanni is fondly remembered by her fellow CSJ Sisters, as well as her brother, sister, nieces, nephews, and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and brother-in-law.

Throughout her 27-year tenure at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton, Sister Giovanni served in various managerial roles, including the Business Office, admissions department, switchboard, and general information. Even after retiring, her dedication to the hospital persisted, as she returned as a volunteer at the Information desk. Sister Giovanni was known for her warmth and graciousness, which she displayed in her interactions with both patients and staff. Together with her close friend Sister Patricia Hanlon, she prioritized maintaining relationships with hospital employees by providing pastoral care and support during challenging times. They offered comfort and compassion to those in need, including their fellow community members.

In the spring of 2019, Sister Giovanni relocated to the Sisters of St. Joseph residence in London, along with other Sisters from Hamilton. She will be remembered for her kindness, gracious disposition, and deep gratitude for the care she received during her final years. The visitation and prayer service for Sister Giovanni will take place on Sunday, July 16th, at the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence in London. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 17th, and interment will be on Tuesday, July 18th, at Marymount Cemetery in Guelph, Ontario. All are welcome to attend these services. The Funeral Mass will also be livestreamed on the Congregation’s website, and expressions of sympathy or donations can be made in memory of Sister Giovanni on the same site.
