Thomas Edward Brown

April 16, 1938

August 6, 2023

Tom, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away while surrounded by his family at Vancouver General Hospital. The incredible care and compassion shown by the ICU staff made his final moments peaceful. Tom’s parents, Jack Brown and Hazel Anglin, as well as his stepmother Doris Brown, preceded him in death, along with his sisters-in-law Kathy Jackson and Judy MacKay.

Tom is lovingly remembered and survived by his daughter Lisa, son Tim, their mother Margy, daughter-in-law Shelley, and granddaughters Annie and Claire. His sister Gail Brown, along with her husband Brian Williston, as well as his nephew Christopher Bissonette and his wife Mei Lin and daughter Elara, and nieces Laurie Speakman and Susan Plasteras and their families also mourn his loss. Additionally, Tom leaves behind his life partner, Janet Shorman, and her sons Chris and Doug, along with their spouses Amanda, Lauren, and Daniel.

During his school years at Point Grey Junior High and Magee High Schools, Tom formed lifelong friendships with members of the “Apes Gang,” although sadly, many of them have also passed away. After graduating from UBC Commerce, Tom joined his father Jack Brown at Brown Bros Ford. In 1981, he expanded the business by adding a Toyota franchise at the original Brown Bros Ford location at W. 41st & Granville. Tom’s accomplishments included serving as president of the Kerrisdale Merchants Association, sitting on the Ford Dealer Council, chairing the Ford Dealer Ad Association, and being president of the BC New Car Dealers Association.

Known for his kindness and generosity, Tom had a great sense of humor, though he could occasionally be a bit grumpy. He took great joy in his numerous dogs and birds, but above all, he cherished his family. His passing has left a void in our hearts.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Donations in Tom’s memory to the VGH Hospital Foundation or his favorite charity would be greatly appreciated.
