November 12, 2023
It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Valerie Giles on November 12, 2023. She was surrounded by her dearest loved ones and slipped away peacefully. She is survived by her loving parents Truman and Mona Holmes, dear husband Jim Giles (son Ronan), her beloved sister and lifelong best friend Lianne Macdonald (children Cameron and Jessie) and her only child, her beautiful daughter Jacquelyn Brow (husband Kyle). Also left to mourn her loss are a large extended family and friends.
Valerie was on the quiet side, intensely private, generous, and gentle. She lived her life by four principles: love, forgive, judge gently and choose joy every day you live. Valerie’s three greatest joys in life were children, cooking, and cats. She enjoyed a very successful 20 year teaching career mainly as a grade three teacher at St. Maria Goretti School in Edmonton. An accomplished cook, she enjoyed nothing more than having folks over for dinner. Filling Jacquelyn and Kyle’s freezer with yummy dinners gave her true delight. Valerie was a lifelong lover of cats and an advocate for special needs cats. She will be greatly missed by her two blind boys Karter and Mickey and her girls Veena and Goose; Goose rarely left Valerie’s side.
Respecting Valerie’s wishes, there will be no service or funeral. Should you wish to honor her please read a book to a child, consider adopting a special needs pet, watch the sunrise, or listen to a song by her favorite band Queen. Donations may also be made in Valerie’s memory to SAFE Team Rescue. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. J. Sabourin, Dr. J. Furlong, and the exceptional staff of Unit 43 at the Grey Nuns Hospital. Our lives are forever changed but we take comfort in knowing that we will be together again someday.
