Valerie (Val) Iren Shaw-Lewis, 89, peacefully passed away on July 1, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta. Val, born on December 14, 1933, in Swansea, South Wales, UK, was the youngest of six children. She pursued a career in nursing and worked in the Maternity Ward at Mount Pleasant Hospital, Swansea. It was at a New Year’s Eve dance in 1958 where she met her loving husband, Alan. They tied the knot in July of the following year. In March 1967, Val, Alan, and their daughters Caryn and Jayne decided to start a new life in Canada. They settled in the Willow Park area, where they built their home and cultivated lasting friendships.

Val made significant contributions to the medical field in Calgary. She initially managed the Calgary Medical Society before transitioning to work in various doctor’s offices. In March 2001, Val established the Calgary Neuropathy Association, turning a mere idea into a reality. She dedicated nine years to nurturing the association until her retirement in 2010. Throughout her life, Val cherished her 63-year marriage to Alan and often advised others to marry a good man with a sense of humor.

Val leaves behind her daughter Jayne and son-in-law Duane residing in Calgary, as well as her son-in-law Ed Zimmerman in Edmonton. She was predeceased by her husband Alan in 2022 and her eldest daughter Caryn in 2017. Val’s grandchildren, Ashley Zimmerman (Joel) and Nikolaus Zimmerman (Laura), along with their dogs Norman and Floyd, will deeply mourn the loss of their beloved Nannie. The family expresses their gratitude to the dedicated staff at Providence Care Centre for their care and support, despite the short duration of Val’s stay.

In accordance with the family’s wishes, a service will not be held. Those who desire to honor Val’s memory may consider making memorial donations to the Calgary Neuropathy Association.
