Vera Emma Shannon (formerly Vera Emma McBride, née Williamson) passed away peacefully in Calgary, Alberta on August 27, 2023, at the age of 91. Born on August 26, 1932, in Athens, Ontario, Vera was the daughter of Carl Williamson and Julia Curtis. She received her education at Oakleaf School, a one-room schoolhouse, and later moved to Toronto, Ontario. In Toronto, Vera married Vernon McBride and became a mother to her two sons, Bradley and Stanley. Eventually, Vera relocated to Calgary to pursue a career in accounting.

In Calgary, Vera found love once again, and in 1983, she married Joseph J. “Joe” Shannon. Together, they created a large, blended family, and were renowned for hosting unforgettable annual Christmas parties. Vera and Joe shared a deep love for life and cherished their time spent with family. Their adventurous spirits led them on travels across the globe, where they delighted in experiencing various cultures.

Vera is preceded in death by her parents, Julia and Carl Williamson, as well as her brothers Gordon Williamson, Mel Williamson, Vern McBride, Joe Shannon, and Carmen Lane. She is survived by her loved ones, including Bea Murphy, her sons Bradley and Stanley McBride, Aaron and Cory Shannon, her son-in-law Derek Lane, grandchildren Natalie Shand, Samuel Steinhilber, Laurren McBride, Samantha Kleinsasser, Mireille McBride, Jessica Zold, Cailey Millard, Jessica Hall, Chad Lane, and her great-grandchildren.

A visitation to pay tribute to Vera will be held on September 5, 2023, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at McInnis & Holloway Funeral Home in Calgary. A Celebration of Vera’s Life will immediately follow at the same location, and a reception will be held in the Hospitality Centre. On September 6, 2023, a Graveside Service will take place at St Mary’s Cemetery. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be streamed live on the website http://www.MHFH.com, and a recording will also be available. Condolences, memories, and photos can be shared and viewed on the website.

Vera had a strong connection to The Alzheimer Society of Calgary, and in memory of her, memorial tributes can be made directly to the organization. Additionally, McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes will plant a tree in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area as a tribute to Vera.
