Vernal SMITH

Vernal Weldon Smith, aged 86, passed away on October 27, 2023, after bravely battling leukemia. Vernal, a native of Moncton, NB, was born on February 5, 1937, to Austin and Ada Smith. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his brother Robert Smith. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Dawn (nee Steeves). Vernal will be deeply missed by his children, Dean (Dawn) and Letitia (Terry), as well as his grandchildren, Candice, Deanna, Vern, and Deaner, along with his six beloved great-grandchildren. Additionally, he leaves behind his nephews Michael and Shawn, and holds a special place in his heart for Leah, Paul, and Kenneth.

During his remarkable life, Vernal served in the Canadian Navy, dedicating his time from July 1957 to May 1978, rising to the rank of Warrant Officer before proudly retiring. Following this, he joined the Nepean Police as a dispatcher, serving the community faithfully from 1978 to 1998. Vernal was a devoted family man who cherished spending quality time with his loved ones. His passions included traveling, canoeing on the lake, motorcycling, and being an active member of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society.

The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the Doctors and Staff at St. Vincent Hospital for their outstanding personalized care and unwavering support, and to those who visited Vernal during his illness for their kindness and compassion. Family and friends are cordially invited to join them at Woodvale Pentecostal Church, located at 205 Greenbank Road, on Thursday, November 2, 2023. A viewing will be held from 10:30 a.m. until the service begins at 11:30 a.m. A reception will follow within the church from 12:30-1:30, and interment will then take place at Capital Memorial Gardens at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Vernal’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.
