Verne Roberts, aged 95, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2023, in Powell River, B.C. His beloved wife, Madeleine, predeceased him in 2018. Verne is survived by his daughters, Lynn Roberts and Lisa (Mike) Daniels, as well as five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Born on June 3, 1928, in Ocean Falls, Verne moved to the Bella Coola Valley at the age of six. He developed a strong work ethic while working on the family farm during his youth, which he carried with him throughout his successful career in the forest industry. Verne and Madeleine met as teenagers in Bella Coola and later reunited in Vancouver, embarking on a 65-year journey together. Verne’s determination and charm won her over, and he playfully referred to their union as ‘the longest battle in BC’.

Verne had a diverse career in the forest industry, serving as a boom man, high rigger, manager, and owner of Greenwood Logging. The family lived in various camps from Moresby to Port Alberni, experiencing countless adventures along the way. Additionally, Verne was a dedicated member and former director of the Truck Logger’s Association, actively supporting the Forestry Museum in Duncan. He also advocated for education and held a position on the board for North Island College. During his retirement, Verne enjoyed traveling with Madeleine and spending winters at their home in Yuma, Arizona. He possessed an insatiable thirst for knowledge and loved sharing articles and information, compiling individual files for each family member. Verne’s energy and enthusiasm seemed boundless, making it difficult to fathom him ever slowing down.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the kind and caring individuals at Willingdon Creek Village, who provided support and care for Verne. Verne leaves behind a remarkable legacy of unconditional love and support for his loved ones. Known for his quick wit and dark humor, he endeared himself to many, forming enduring friendships he cherished deeply. A celebration in Verne’s honor will be held on July 23, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Crown Isle Resort in Courtenay, B.C. Verne Roberts, our Chief, will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all.
