On Friday, October 13, my beloved husband and best friend passed away in the comfort of our home. He was surrounded by our loved ones and his brave battle with Cognitive Dementia came to an end. Right from the start, Walter had made the decision to pursue Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID). His fear of losing his cognitive abilities and his strong desire to avoid the prospect of living in a nursing home shaped his choice.

Walter devoted an incredible 54 years of his life to serving as a Peng with HBOG since 1971. He cherished his work, which allowed us to embark on countless adventures and reside in various countries. During his career, he lent his expertise as a consultant in Canada, Houston, China, Malaysia, Egypt, Alaska, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Kurdistan, and Albania. We were fortunate enough to accompany him on many of these assignments. In the final chapter of his professional journey, we settled in Halifax for five years before retiring to Courtenay, on Vancouver Island.

His utmost pride was reserved for our sons and their families. Robert and Wendy, who manage their own companies in Halifax, boast two university students, Duncan and Georgia. Ryan and Janis, residing in Courtenay, both excel as doctors. Their eldest daughter, Ayla, is currently pursuing her studies at the university, and we cherish our precious Nora and Graham as they continue their education.

I am at a loss as to how to navigate life without him. Walter brought a serene presence into our lives and a simple smile from him was enough to assure me that everything was right in our world. Forever in love, Heather.
